Our R&D in NDT methods of motorcycle helmets has led to significant discoveries in ensuring helmet safety.
Four NDT techniques were explored to correlate physical damages: visual and correlation analysis, various x-ray techniques (fixed & mobile), ultrasonic NDT, and microscopy. However, Holographic Interferometry emerged as the most effective method.
Ultrasonics: While ultrasonic NDT shows promise in structural analysis, challenges arise with thermoplastic helmet shells due to potential material degradation from coupling substances, making it impractical for ‘hairline’ fracture detection.
X-ray: Industrial CT scanning revealed limitations in imaging EPS liners due to metal components causing artifacts, impacting image clarity and geometry extraction.
Microscopy Analysis: Identified potential fractures but lacked correlation with x-ray images, highlighting limitations in current imaging techniques.
To overcome these challenges, The Helmet Doctors advanced their R&D with specialized technologies. Shearography and holographic interferometry now provide precise detection of internal defects, using optical interferometric technology to monitor small displacements and detect defects as small as 10nm.
