Safety Advocacy: Enhancing Helmet

Safety Standards

It is the recommendation of government & industry authorities along with helmet manufacturers that motorcycle helmets be replaced following an accident or mishandling, i.e. any drop or exposure to chemicals such as petrol, regardless of the visibility of damage.

Given that damage to motorcycle helmets often goes unnoticed, many people keep using their helmets following an incident as they are unsure if any impact even took place. It is the belief of many that no visible damage means, there is no damage present, and are deterred by the expenses involved in the purchase of a brand-new replacement helmet.

However, if damage is present in a helmet, regardless of whether it is visible or not to the naked eye, the helmet does not and will not offer suitable protection in the event of a future accident and the motorcyclist is more likely to sustain significant injuries as a result.

Our helmet laser scanning technology has been made available to interested motorcyclists & motorsport enthusiasts wanting to ensure their helmets are structurally sound and provide valuable and potentially life-saving information to those with unknown damaged helmets.

As we all know, motorcycle helmets are subject to regular self-assessed inspection by the helmet owner or at times an authorised scrutineering process during a sporting event. These self-assessed inspections are required as per manufacturing guidelines and to ensure the structural integrity is kept to manufacturing, industry & government safety standards.

All helmets manufactured and sold globally must comply with a recognized safety standard.

Motorcycle helmet safety standards include:

  1. AS/NZS 1698 (Standards Australia Standards New Zealand),
  2. UNECE or ECE 22.05 (United Nations Economic Commission for Europe),
  3. DOT FMVSS (Department of Transportation Federal Motor Vehicle Safety Standards),
  4. SNELL M2020.
  5. JAPANESE JIS T8133:2000
  6. FIM FRHPhe-01
  7. FIA 8859-2015

Each standard has its own requirements and testing procedures to ensure that the helmets can withstand various head impact speeds, penetration types (flat surface or sharp protrusion), successive impacts, and retention forces that are applicable to their sporting, recreational, and road safety requirements.

Our laser scanning technology assesses damage in motorcycle helmets via Non-Destructive Testing methods. This is extremely beneficial for various national and global industries & organizations that are affected by the number of injuries to motorcyclists either on the road or in motorsport activities/competitions.

Insurance companies will benefit from the reduced level of risk to motorcyclists by being exposed to fewer claims due to more motorcyclists being able to take the preventative steps in having their helmet scanned uncovering helmet damage.

Government agencies will benefit from reduced head trauma rehabilitation costs reducing the outlay to their health portfolios; motorcycle helmet manufacturers will benefit from increased customer awareness for quality products. However, it will be you who will benefit most of all, by possibly preventing an unwarranted & unnecessary traumatic brain injury or even death by identifying before your next accident that your existing helmet was structurally compromised by an impact or an accidental mishandling.

Even if your helmet’s structural integrity was intact and it was deemed fit for use, you would still benefit from knowing that you will not have to worry about purchasing a replacement helmet (saving you money) when you have the peace of mind that your helmet still meets the expected safety standards.
